Tennessee Respite Coalition
The Tennessee Respite Coalition (TRC) supports and advocates for family caregivers (including parents with special needs children). It was established as a grassroots advocacy group early in the 90s, and evolved into a 501c3 service focused organization in March, 2003. Its four main areas of service include: a toll free helpline, advocacy, volunteer respite, and Family Directed Respite. Its mission is to ensure the quality of life for family caregivers through Respite. The grant requested in this application will be used to fund direct assistance to caregivers through vouchers, staff time and payroll benefits to administer the voucher program and related costs including travel, program supplies, and postage. After receiving respite for a 6 month period, 29 of the 37 (80%) family caregivers will report lower stress (reducing the likelihood of abuse), feeling they can better care for their loved ones, being able to engage in self-care (proven to extend the length of caregiving), the desire to have Respite again and that respite is beneficial to the entire family (Respite is directly linked to strengthening the family unit/ marriage). 29 of 37 (80%) families will report receiving Respite at 1/3 less of the traditional rate of pay, (resulting in increased Respite time) because they are in control of the usage and negotiation.
