 STARS - Nashville was established in 1984, STARS has existed to serve schools and communities by providing prevention, intervention, and treatment services, addressing bullying, substance abuse, violence, and other social and emotional barriers to success.  The funds requested in the application will support Student Assistance Program and Youth Overcoming Drug Abuse staff salaries and other related expenses.  The agency’s outcomes include: 225 of 300 (75%) students to receive individual, classroom group, or small group counseling will better understand the dangers of tobacco, alcohol and other drug uses. 225 of 300 (75%) students to receive individual, classroom group, or small group counseling will report being more likely to take a stand against substance use. 20 of 30 (66%) patients who meet diagnostic criteria for substance abuse will complete treatment services at YODA's IOP program as a result of assessment and brief intervention. 12 of 20 patients (60%) in treatment will report, after 60 days, change as evidenced by at least two indicators including: disengagement from gang activity, increased drug refusal activity, increased scholastic activity, increased participation in sober social activities or participation in self-help groups. 10 of 20 patients (50%) will report two or more indicators of abstinence from substance abuse at a six month interview.
