Since 1968, the Legal Aid Society has enforced, advanced, and defended the legal rights of low-income and vulnerable families in order to secure for them the basic necessities of life.  In 2011, the Legal Aid Society provided free legal services for low-income families in over 8,400 civil cases.  These cases focused on needs such as housing, healthcare, income, education and safety.  The grant requested in this application will be used to fund a portion of salary and benefits for the staff attorney and a portion of the cost of educational materials for dissemination.  20 of 25 cases (80%) involving extended representation will result in low-income families receiving civil legal assistance with a problem (such as unsafe housing, need for an order of protection to ensure safety from an abuser, wrongfully denied medical benefits, access to additional family income or access to special education services) that could adversely affect a family's health.  64 of 75 (85%) of the cases involving legal advice or brief services will result in low-income families receiving civil legal assistance with a problem or problems as stated above that may adversely affect a family's health.
