KIPP Academy Nashville (a KIPP Nashville school) opened in July 2005 to serve youth from the educationally underserved neighborhoods in East Nashville.  The grant requested in this application will be used to fund a portion of budgeted annual salary for 1 FTE School Counselor for 2013-2014 school year. 210 out of 350 (60%) of KIPP Nashville students will close individual achievement gaps by making more than 1.0 years of academic growth. 64 out of 85 students (75%) identified as struggling in at least one of the following areas - depression, anxiety, anger, disruptive behavior, and negative self-concept - will improve their score on one or more of the Beck Youth Inventories by at least two points, 71 out of 80 students (89%) identified as struggling with low personal resources and high vulnerabilities will improve their score on the Resiliency Scales for Children and Adolescents (RSCA) by at least two points. Two points on the Resiliency Scales for Children and Adolescents is significant because each sub-scale is twenty questions and a growth of at least two points will likely move a child up a level on the scale which is significant growth for one year.  The rating scale measures from low to high, including five total categories.
