Bridges, formerly the League for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and EAR Foundation, began in Nashville in 1927 and is the only comprehensive, health and human service agency dedicated to providing a range of services for Deaf and hard of hearing in middle Tennessee and southern Kentucky. The agency was originally established as a speech or lip-reading agency, and its 501(c)(3) was established in July of 1948. While the name has changed throughout Bridges's years of service, the focus has remained the same, to unite the Deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing communities through education, services, and support, empowering individuals to achieve their full potential. Its outcomes for the year include: - in the Education and Outreach department, at least 298 of 350 (approximately 85%) attendees at educational presentations will indicate greater of knowledge about the topic, activities they can perform to reduce or control risk factors, or how to improve communication with their patients with hearing loss. In the Living Well program, at least 90% (54 of 60) of customers being assessed will indicate they understand their own wellness risks better and know more about how to control or reduce those risks as a result of the feedback they receive after participating in the individual evaluation.
