Established in 1999, BrightStone provides a comprehensive work, social support, and future residential community for adults with special needs, expanding their potential and helping them develop mentally, physically, socially, emotionally, and spiritually. The grant requested in this application will be used to fund nursing, therapy, and wellness professionals to provide instruction for the adults with developmental disabilities, consultation services for staff, and educational presentations to families, in an effort to effect a positive change in overall health and wellness for adults who have intellectual and developmental challenges. Upon participation in nutrition class, general exercise class, and yoga class, 26 out of 34 (76%) adult students (who will permit a blood pressure test) with blood pressure in normal range or up to 140/90 will maintain their blood pressure or drop up to 2 points in either systolic or diastolic blood pressure reading within one year. Given the opportunity for general exercises including the introduction of yoga for individuals with special needs, 18 out of 32 (56%) students who are physically able to participate will demonstrate improvement in one or more areas of flexibility, strength, balance and endurance.
